Mile High Freedom Bands is a Denver-based LGBTQ+ and ally music organization headquartered at 216 S. Grant Street, offering a home for musicians of all skill levels. The group traces back to 1984, when Denver musician Robert Brown founded the Denver Gay and Lesbian Community Band; it later rebranded as Mile High Freedom Bands to reflect a broader mission of inclusion. Today the organization runs multiple ensembles, including a symphonic band, string orchestra, symphony orchestra, jazz big band, marching band, pep band, and smaller chamber groups. In 2018 it added MHFB Youth, which has awarded more than $4,500 in scholarships to LGBTQ+ students. Allies are welcome alongside LGBTQ+ members. As a member of the Colorado LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce, Mile High Freedom Bands serves the LGBTQ+ community in Denver.
